Members of Sri Lanka national cricket team are set to come together in Kuala Lumpur this May to celebrate 30 years since their unforgettable World Cup victory.
According to reports, the reunion will take place at the Royal Selangor Club, kicking off with a gala dinner on May 15. The celebrations will continue the following day with an exhibition match at the Bukit Kiara Cricket Ground, where the Sri Lankan legends will take on a Rest of the World team.
Organisers say the event is not just about reliving past glory, but also about inspiring the next generation of cricketers. Former Malaysian player Devindran Ramanathan highlighted the importance of using this opportunity to motivate young talent, noting that the reunion is meant to show aspiring players what they can achieve.
As part of this effort, around 20 schoolboys from the Orang Asli community in Hulu Perak will be invited to Kuala Lumpur to take part in a special coaching clinic led by the Sri Lankan stars. Organisers are seeking sponsorship support to help fund the programme and provide equipment for the young players over the coming months.
Former Malaysia captain Selvaratnam Karunakarer said the true value of the event lies in its impact on young cricketers, especially those who may not have easy access to opportunities. He believes that meeting legends can inspire confidence and make the sport feel more within reach.
The reunion also brings back memories of one of cricket’s most iconic moments. On March 17, 1996, at Gaddafi Stadium, Sri Lanka defeated Australia to claim their first World Cup title. A brilliant unbeaten century from Aravinda de Silva and steady leadership from captain Arjuna Ranatunga guided the team to victory, while the aggressive approach of Sanath Jayasuriya and Romesh Kaluwitharana changed the way one-day cricket was played.
Three decades on, that historic win continues to inspire, reminding fans and young players alike that bold thinking and belief can redefine the game.
