Severe Weather Hits Sri Lanka: Over 76,000 People Affected

Severe weather has wreaked havoc across Sri Lanka, with heavy rains and flooding affecting over 76,000 individuals in 11 districts as of October 13, 2024. The Disaster Management Centre (DMC) reported widespread damage, with thousands of families displaced and several houses partially damaged.

The Impact Across Sri Lanka

The Gampaha district has been the hardest hit, with 68,672 residents impacted. Heavy rains have caused flooding and infrastructure damage across multiple regions. Sadly, two lives have been lost, and two individuals have sustained injuries due to the adverse weather conditions.

Rivers and Water Levels: A Continued Threat

While rainfall has subsided in some areas, water levels in rivers like Kelani, Attanagalu Oya, and Kalu River remain high, maintaining a risk of further flooding. According to the Irrigation Department, some rivers are still at caution levels, and residents in low-lying areas are urged to stay vigilant.

Government Response and Safety Measures

Authorities are deploying disaster relief teams, with the Sri Lanka Navy already positioned in high-risk areas. Air Force helicopters are also on standby to assist with flood relief efforts. The National Building Research Organization (NBRO) has issued landslide warnings for several regions, including Colombo, Galle, and Kegalle, which remain in effect throughout the day.

Ongoing Warnings and Safety Precautions

With more rainfall expected, the Department of Meteorology has issued a red alert for strong winds and rough seas, urging people to avoid venturing into the sea areas from Puttalam to Hambantota. Travel and transportation are also disrupted, with train services limited on the Puttalam route and key expressway entry points closed.

Call for Public Awareness and Relief Support

As the situation continues to evolve, residents in flood-prone areas are urged to heed safety advisories and government warnings. With heavy rains expected to persist, communities must remain prepared for any further challenges. Relief efforts are underway, and residents are being sheltered in temporary safe zones as emergency services work to provide aid.
