Diwali, the grand Festival of Lights, will be celebrated on October 31, 2024, with festivities possibly extending into November 1, 2024, in certain regions.
This festival marks one of India’s most significant holidays, celebrated by millions across the globe. Diwali represents the victory of light over darkness and good over evil, as homes and streets come alive with dazzling lights, vibrant rangoli designs, and fireworks.

The name Diwali, derived from the Sanskrit word “Deepavali,” translates to “row of lights,” symbolizing the illumination of homes and hearts to ward off darkness. The festival holds special importance to Hindus, but it is also celebrated by Jains, Sikhs, and Buddhists. Hindus commemorate the return of Lord Rama to Ayodhya after defeating the demon king Ravana. For Jains, Diwali honors the spiritual liberation of Lord Mahavira in 527 B.C. Sikhs observe the release of Guru Hargobind Ji from Mughal imprisonment, while in certain Buddhist communities, it represents the victory of good over evil forces.
Traditions Across Regions
Diwali traditions vary throughout India. In Northern India, people celebrate Rama’s return by lighting rows of clay lamps, while in Southern India, the festival commemorates Lord Krishna’s victory over the demon Narakasura. In Western India, it marks the day Lord Vishnu sent the demon King Bali to rule the netherworld.

The Five Days of Diwali:
- Day 1: Dhanteras – Families clean their homes and buy gold or utensils, a sign of prosperity.
- Day 2: Naraka Chaturdashi – Homes are decorated with clay lamps, and colorful rangoli designs adorn entrances.
- Day 3: Lakshmi Puja – The main day of Diwali, when prayers are offered to Goddess Lakshmi, followed by feasts and grand fireworks.
- Day 4: Govardhan Puja – This marks the start of the Hindu New Year, with families exchanging gifts.
- Day 5: Bhai Dooj – A day dedicated to the bond between brothers and sisters, where brothers visit their married sisters, and they share a meal together.

Diwali celebrations aren’t confined to India alone. Leicester, UK, is known for hosting the largest Diwali festivities outside of India, with thousands gathering to watch music, dance, and fireworks displays. Across the world, millions take part in the festival, lighting diyas, exchanging gifts, and enjoying festive feasts.
Diwali 2024 promises to be a vibrant celebration, with joy, light, and togetherness illuminating the hearts and homes of millions worldwide.
