School principals in Sri Lanka have been advised to delay sports events and outdoor activities because of the prevailing hot weather, to ensure the safety and health of the students.

The Ministry of Education has issued a notice instructing school principals to delay sports meets and other outdoor activities due to the current high temperatures. Schools are advised to reschedule these events to a later date, specifically after April 24, 2024, aligning with the third phase of the first school term. This precautionary measure is to safeguard student health amidst the heatwave.

Minister of Education Susil Premajayantha highlighted that despite the hot weather, numerous schools had planned their inter-house sports events. He emphasized that the ongoing first school term extends beyond the New Year holidays, providing an opportunity to conduct these activities in cooler conditions post-holidays. Principals are expected to receive formal notification through a circular, advising the reorganization of sports and outdoor events after the holiday period.
