Robert Carradine, Beloved ‘Lizzie McGuire’ Dad, Dies at 71

Robert Carradine, Star of ‘Revenge of the Nerds,’ Passes Away at 71

Robert Carradine, widely recognized for his portrayal of the endearing Lewis Skolnick in Revenge of the Nerds and as Sam McGuire in Disney Channel’s Lizzie McGuire, has died at the age of 71.

His family confirmed on Tuesday that he died by suicide after contending with bipolar disorder for nearly twenty years.

Family Statement

Carradine’s older brother, Keith Carradine, spoke to Deadline on behalf of the family, offering a heartfelt and candid account of Robert’s struggles.

“It is with deep sorrow that we share the passing of our beloved father, grandfather, uncle, and brother, Robert Carradine,” the statement read. “Though the world can often feel overwhelming, Bobby was a source of light for those around him. We are heartbroken by his loss and want to honor his courageous battle with bipolar disorder over nearly two decades.”

The family deliberately chose to be transparent about both the cause of his death and his mental health challenges. “We hope his journey encourages open conversations and reduces the stigma surrounding mental illness,” the statement added. Keith elaborated, “We want people to know about his struggle, and there’s no shame in it. It’s an illness that ultimately overcame him, but we want to celebrate his gift, his talent, and his beautiful soul. He will be deeply missed.”

A Storied Career

Born on March 24, 1954, Robert Carradine was the youngest son of actor John Carradine and brother to actors David Carradine, Keith Carradine, and Disney Imagineer Christopher Carradine.

He made his screen debut in 1972 with The Cowboys, starring alongside John Wayne—a role his brother David encouraged him to pursue. He later appeared in Martin Scorsese’s Mean Streets (1973) and Hal Ashby’s Oscar-winning Coming Home (1978) alongside Jane Fonda and Jon Voight, garnering praise for his acting talents.

In 1980, he featured in two films at the Cannes Film Festival: Samuel Fuller’s The Big Red One with Mark Hamill and Lee Marvin, and Walter Hill’s The Long Riders, where he acted alongside his brothers David and Keith. Hill famously cast real-life brothers to play real-life outlaw brothers, creating one of the most memorable ensembles of the time.

Carradine’s most iconic role came in 1984 with Revenge of the Nerds, where his performance as head nerd Lewis Skolnick became a defining part of 1980s pop culture. Later, he captured a younger audience as Sam McGuire, the father in Disney Channel’s Lizzie McGuire, introducing him to a whole new generation of fans.
