Rise in Colorectal Cancer Among Young Adults Sparks Health Concerns

Health authorities in Sri Lanka have expressed growing concern over a significant increase in colorectal cancer cases among adults aged 30 to 50 years. Nearly 3,000 cases were recorded nationwide in 2022 alone.

According to Regional Director of Health Services Dr. Senaka Thalagala, colorectal cancer has now become the second most common cancer among men and the third most common among women in the country.

Global data from the (WHO) shows that in 2022 there were 1.9 million new colorectal cancer cases worldwide, resulting in approximately 900,000 deaths, making it the second most common cancer globally after lung cancer.

Medical experts highlight that colorectal cancer was once more common in individuals over 50. However, recent trends show a worrying rise among younger adults, signaling a shift in disease patterns.

Speaking at a media briefing at the Health Promotion Bureau, Consultant Community Physician Dr. Hasarali Fernando from the National Cancer Control Programme described the trend as a serious public health concern.

She stressed the importance of:

✅ Early screening

✅ Timely diagnosis

✅ Greater public awareness

Health officials are urging the public not to ignore early warning signs and to seek immediate medical advice if symptoms appear, as early detection significantly improves survival rates.
