UAE Philharmonic Orchestra’s Nicolas Mann wins prestigious “Conductor of the Year” award

The iconic Bolshoi Theatre once again became the centre of global classical music as it hosted the VIII International Music Award BraVo 2026 one of the world’s most prestigious cultural events, often referred to as the “Grammy of the East.”

The ceremony brought together acclaimed artists from more than 11 countries, including representatives from the Middle East, reinforcing the award’s growing role as a global platform for cultural exchange and artistic collaboration.

A key highlight of this year’s edition was a major recognition for the UAE music scene, as Nicolas Mann, Chief Conductor of the UAE Philharmonic Orchestra, was awarded the title “Conductor of the Year.” The honour marks a significant milestone in his international career and places the UAE Philharmonic Orchestra firmly on the global classical music map.

During the event, the orchestra was introduced as the “Orchestra of the Future” and described as an “ideal global community,” showcasing how musicians of different nationalities can come together through a shared artistic language. The recognition highlighted the ensemble’s growing reputation as a symbol of cultural unity and collaboration.

The emotional peak of the gala came during the closing performance, conducted by Mann himself on the stage of the Bolshoi Theatre. Addressing the audience, he emphasised the importance of passing musical knowledge and passion to younger generations before leading the final piece alongside Bolshoi Theatre opera singer Agunda Kulaeva.

The finale brought all laureates from more than 10 countries onto the stage, symbolising international harmony through music and closing the ceremony on a powerful note of unity.

Over the years, the “Conductor of the Year” title has been associated with some of the world’s most distinguished maestros, further elevating the prestige of Mann’s achievement.

The BraVo Awards have previously honoured globally recognised figures such as José Carreras, Plácido Domingo, and Anna Netrebko, as well as international celebrities including John Travolta and Sophia Loren, reflecting its broad cultural reach.

This year’s edition also recognised excellence across multiple categories. Renowned pianist Denis Matsuev received the award for “Classical Composition in Contemporary Performance,” while Aida Garifullina was named “World Star.” Ildar Abdrazakov also earned recognition for Best Male Vocal Performance.

The international scope of the awards was further strengthened by winners from the Gulf and Middle East region, including Marwan Fagi (Saudi Arabia), Mohamed Saleh (Egypt), and Rony Barrak (Lebanon), underscoring BraVo’s commitment to global artistic diversity.

Established in 2018, the BraVo International Music Award continues to be held annually at the Bolshoi Theatre, celebrating excellence in classical and contemporary performance while fostering international cultural dialogue.
