Modi’s Israel Visit Puts India’s Middle East Strategy in Focus

Indian Prime Minister has arrived in Israel for a two-day visit — his first since the Gaza war began — in a trip that analysts say will test India’s diplomatic balancing act in the Middle East.

Modi was welcomed at Ben-Gurion Airport by Israeli Prime Minister . During the visit, he is scheduled to address the and meet Israeli President . Notably, there are no meetings planned with Palestinian leaders.

Strengthening Strategic Ties

India and Israel have significantly expanded cooperation in defence, technology, and trade over the past decade. India remains one of Israel’s largest buyers of defence equipment, and both countries collaborate closely on counter-terrorism and innovation.

Netanyahu described the visit as “historic,” calling the India-Israel partnership a powerful alliance built on shared strategic interests. Modi echoed the sentiment, stating that India values its enduring friendship with Israel, rooted in trust and innovation.

Modi previously made history in 2017 as the first Indian prime minister to visit Israel — a milestone widely seen as transforming bilateral relations.

Balancing Regional Interests

However, experts say the visit also highlights India’s diplomatic challenge. While New Delhi has condemned the 7 October Hamas-led attacks and expressed solidarity with Israel, it has also voiced concern over civilian casualties in Gaza and reiterated support for a two-state solution.

India maintains longstanding ties with Palestine — having recognised it in 1988 — and also enjoys strategic relationships with Iran and several Arab nations. Analysts believe discussions about rising regional tensions, including concerns over Iran and increased US military presence, are likely to remain private.

Political Reactions

In Israel, opposition parties have threatened to boycott Modi’s address to parliament amid domestic political disputes. Meanwhile, in India, Congress spokesperson criticised the visit, accusing the government of sidelining the Palestinian cause.

Despite the criticism, analysts argue that the visit reflects India’s long-term strategic priorities. With security concerns involving Pakistan and China, India continues to seek advanced defence technology — an area where Israel plays a key role.

At the same time, regional stability in the Middle East remains critical for India’s energy security, trade routes, and broader geopolitical interests.

Modi’s visit ultimately underscores India’s effort to strengthen ties with Israel while carefully preserving its broader relationships across the Middle East.
