Melbourne is named as the most diverse food city in the world

Melbourne has been ranked the best city in the world for food diversity, topping a new global study that puts its dining scene ahead of New York, London and Paris.

The research, conducted by travel company Holafly, analysed restaurant data from Tripadvisor to compare how cities balance local and international cuisine. Melbourne came out on top, with 79 percent of its restaurants serving international food and 21 percent focused on local cuisine.

The lower share of local cuisine was a key factor in the ranking, used as an indicator of culinary diversity and the ability for visitors to experience a wide range of global flavours within a single city.

The study also assessed the number of Michelin starred restaurants, the variety of cuisines available and how well cities cater to dietary needs such as vegetarian and gluten free options. Across these measures, Melbourne scored strongly, reflecting both its scale and adaptability as a dining destination.

Long considered Australia’s food capital, Melbourne’s result reinforces its reputation for variety rather than a single defining cuisine. The city’s multicultural population continues to shape its dining landscape, from long standing family run venues to newer openings that draw on global influences.

Its cafe culture, inner city dining precincts and constant turnover of new venues all contribute to a scene that feels both established and in flux. That mix is part of what keeps Melbourne competitive with larger global cities.

For visitors, the appeal is straightforward. It is possible to move between neighbourhoods and experience completely different cuisines within a single day, without needing to plan far in advance.
