The historic Maradana Railway Station has officially reopened with upgraded passenger facilities following the successful completion of the first phase of its renovation project.
The reopening ceremony, held on April 26, was conducted under the patronage of Bimal Rathnayake, marking a key milestone in the station’s modernization process.
The renovation initiative forms part of the government’s “Clean Sri Lanka” programme, alongside the broader “Sihinaya Gamananthaya” project, which aims to upgrade 100 railway stations across the country. The programme is being implemented through a collaboration between Sri Lanka Railways, private sector partners, and civil organisations.
The first phase of the project, which cost around Rs. 35 million, was fully sponsored by Akbar Brothers. Work was completed over a six-month period under the supervision of the Department of Archaeology.
Several key improvements have been introduced under this phase, including the installation of CCTV surveillance systems, upgraded lighting, improved sanitation facilities with modern fittings, as well as enhanced interior and exterior painting and landscaping work.
Authorities also carried out major restoration work on the station’s century-old roof, which had not undergone significant repairs for decades. Persistent water leakage issues were resolved, and more than 2,000 square feet of the concrete roof was waterproofed to ensure long-term durability.
Officials noted that additional phases of renovation are planned in the future, as the station continues to serve as a vital transport hub connecting passengers across the island.
