Maliban Biscuit Manufactories stands today as one of Sri Lanka’s most iconic and trusted food brands, with a rich history that spans nearly a century. From humble beginnings to becoming a household name both locally and internationally, Maliban’s journey is a testament to vision, resilience, and an unwavering commitment to quality.
The story begins in the early twentieth century, when a young entrepreneur, Angulugaha Gamage Hinnyappuhamy, arrived in Colombo from the south of Ceylon in search of opportunity. Starting with a modest tea kiosk on First Cross Street, his determination and work ethic quickly set the foundation for something greater. By 1935, he had established the Maliban Hotel on Maliban Street in Pettah, marking the first major milestone in what would become a remarkable business journey.
As the enterprise grew, Hinnyappuhamy was joined by his brothers, A G Wickramapala and A G Jinadasa, who played key roles in managing and expanding the business. Recognizing the increasing demand for high-quality baked goods, the family ventured into bakery production, opening an artisan bakery in Kotahena. Their commitment to superior taste and quality quickly gained popularity, leading to demand that exceeded supply.

A pivotal moment came in August 1954, when Maliban established Sri Lanka’s first mechanized biscuit manufacturing facility. This move marked the company’s transition from a small-scale operation to an industrial powerhouse. With consistent quality and innovative production methods, Maliban biscuits soon became a favorite among consumers, earning a reputation for excellence across the island.
The 1960s saw further expansion as the company relocated to a larger, modern facility in Ratmalana. Equipped with semi-automated manufacturing processes, the new factory ensured higher efficiency, improved food safety standards, and consistent product quality. Over the years, continuous upgrades and the adoption of advanced technology have positioned Maliban’s manufacturing facilities among the best in Asia.
Maliban’s growth was not limited to Sri Lanka. The company began exporting its products in the mid-1960s, steadily building an international presence. Today, Maliban biscuits are enjoyed in numerous countries, reflecting the brand’s global appeal and adherence to international quality standards. Even during the influx of international competitors in the 1980s, Maliban maintained its strong market position through its dedication to taste, consistency, and consumer trust.
At the heart of Maliban’s enduring success lies the founding principle of delivering uncompromised quality and taste. This philosophy continues to guide the company as it evolves with changing consumer preferences while staying true to its heritage.
From a small tea kiosk to a global biscuit brand, Maliban Biscuit Manufactories represents more than just a business success story—it is a symbol of Sri Lankan entrepreneurship, innovation, and excellence that continues to inspire generations.
