Hollywood icon John Travolta was honored with a surprise honorary Palme d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival on Friday, ahead of the premiere of his long-awaited directorial debut, “Propeller One-Way Night Coach.”
Best known for classic films such as “Grease” and “Pulp Fiction,” Travolta appeared visibly moved as he received the prestigious recognition, calling it “beyond the Oscar” while reflecting on his decades-long career in cinema.
The actor’s debut film, “Propeller,” is a deeply personal project inspired by his own novel written more than 30 years ago. The story follows a young boy’s fascination with aviation and a transformative cross-country flight during the golden age of air travel.
Travolta not only directed the film but also took on multiple roles including producing, writing, narrating, and financing the project, describing it as a true labor of love. He explained that the film represents a reflective journey back to the beginning of his artistic path.
In a unique personal touch, Travolta flew himself and his daughter, Ella Bleu Travolta—who also stars in the film as a flight attendant—to the festival, sharing the moment on social media.
Speaking about the project, Travolta said he chose to direct it himself because of its deeply personal nature, adding that it felt like a way to close a meaningful chapter in his life by revisiting where his journey began.
Travolta’s career spans decades, beginning with his breakout roles in the late 1970s in “Saturday Night Fever” and “Carrie.” After a career dip, he made a major comeback with Quentin Tarantino’s “Pulp Fiction,” which premiered at Cannes in 1994 and revived his status as one of Hollywood’s most recognizable stars.
He later went on to star in major films including “Get Shorty,” “Face/Off,” and “Hairspray,” solidifying his place in Hollywood history.
Reflecting on his journey, Travolta described his life as enriched by multiple art forms—acting, dancing, singing, theatre, and even aviation.
The film “Propeller One-Way Night Coach” is featured in the Cannes Premiere section and is scheduled for release on Apple TV on May 29.
