Instagram has rolled out a long-awaited update that allows users to change the order of images and videos within a carousel post even after it has been shared. The new feature is expected to give creators greater flexibility in how they present their content on the platform.
With this update, users can simply press and drag items within a carousel to rearrange them, making it easier to refine the look and flow of a post without having to delete and repost it. Instagram says this added control helps ensure that posts continue to match a creator’s intended style and message.
However, the platform has clarified that while users can reorder existing content, they cannot add new photos or videos to a carousel once it has been published. Any additional content will still require creating a new post.
The feature has been one of the most requested improvements by users, many of whom have long expressed frustration over the inability to adjust carousel order after posting. Its introduction is likely to be welcomed, especially among content creators who regularly experiment with layouts and storytelling formats.
Carousel posts themselves have become an increasingly effective way to boost engagement. According to insights previously shared by Instagram head Adam Mosseri, such posts tend to keep users engaged for longer periods, improving overall reach. Supporting this, research by Buffer in 2025 found that carousel posts generate around 12% more engagement compared to single-image posts.
With the addition of post-publishing editing, creators now have even more opportunities to optimize their content and experiment with what works best for their audience.
