IndiGo, India’s leading airline, has announced the appointment of renowned aviation executive Willie Walsh as its new Chief Executive Officer. Walsh, who previously served as CEO of International Airlines Group (IAG), brings decades of global airline experience to India’s largest carrier by market share.
The appointment signals IndiGo’s intent to strengthen its international operations, expand global connectivity, and optimize strategic growth in an increasingly competitive aviation market. The airline emphasized that Walsh’s leadership will focus on enhancing operational efficiency, customer experience, and long-term profitability.
“Willie Walsh is one of the most respected figures in global aviation, known for his strategic vision and operational expertise,” said Rakesh Gangwal. “We are confident that under his guidance, IndiGo will continue to grow both domestically and internationally.”
Walsh, a veteran in airline management, has been credited with leading IAG to operational efficiency and profitability while navigating complex global challenges. His tenure includes significant mergers and acquisitions, cost optimization programs, and strategic expansions that transformed IAG into one of Europe’s most successful airline groups.
IndiGo has steadily increased its footprint across Asia and the Middle East, and with Walsh at the helm, the airline plans to accelerate fleet expansion, strengthen its low-cost carrier model, and explore partnerships with international carriers.
The airline also stated that Walsh’s appointment reflects its commitment to world-class governance and industry best practices, aligning with IndiGo’s mission to deliver safe, reliable, and affordable air travel to millions of passengers annually.
