India-Sri Lanka Ferry Service Set to Launch in Two Weeks: High Commissioner Reveals Plans

In an exciting development for regional connectivity, the Indian High Commissioner to Sri Lanka, Santosh Jha, has announced the imminent launch of a ferry service between Nagapattinam and Kankasenturai, scheduled to commence in just two weeks pending final preparations.

Indian High Commissioner Santosh Jha unveiled plans for a new ferry service linking India and Sri Lanka, slated to begin operations within a fortnight, pending necessary arrangements. Jha emphasized the strategic significance of fostering closer ties between the two nations, highlighting ongoing discussions with the Sri Lankan government regarding the establishment of a land connectivity corridor. This ambitious endeavor, aimed at enhancing bilateral trade and cultural exchange, marks the initial phase of a comprehensive project expected to unfold over the coming years.

Jha elaborated on the multifaceted cooperation between India and Sri Lanka, particularly in the energy sector, with proposals underway for the construction of an oil pipeline from south India to Trincomalee. Moreover, he articulated plans to extend this connectivity initiative further, envisaging a link from Thalaimannar to the eastern province, thereby bolstering regional infrastructure and economic integration.

In addition to these strategic initiatives, Jha underscored India’s commitment to supporting community development projects across Sri Lanka, with a substantial $12 million grant assistance program earmarked for 30 projects spanning diverse sectors such as housing, education, and infrastructure. This concerted effort reflects India’s enduring partnership with Sri Lanka in fostering inclusive growth and prosperity.
