India Awarded $14.2 Million Bonus After Historic T20 World Cup Triumph

India’s men’s cricket team has been rewarded with a massive bonus after winning the Twenty20 World Cup, with the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) announcing a cash award of 1.31 billion rupees (about $14.24 million) on Tuesday. The amount is nearly six times greater than the official prize money the team received for winning the tournament.

India secured their third men’s T20 World Cup title on Sunday with a commanding 96-run victory over New Zealand in the final held in Ahmedabad. The triumph earned the team $2.34 million in tournament prize money.

To honour the achievement, the BCCI — widely regarded as the wealthiest governing body in world cricket — approved the additional bonus for the players, coaching staff and selectors. The reward is also notable for being roughly $3 million more than the tournament’s total prize pool of $11.25 million.

In a statement, the board praised the team for their outstanding performance and congratulated the players and support staff on the historic victory, expressing hopes for continued success in the years ahead.

The BCCI has previously given large bonuses to national teams after major achievements. Following India’s Champions Trophy victory last year, the squad received a cash reward of $6.72 million, which was three times the official prize money for that tournament.

With India now crowned three-time T20 World Cup champions, captain Suryakumar Yadav said the team’s next major ambition is to win a gold medal at the 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles, where cricket is set to make its return to the Olympic programme.
