India-Africa Forum Summit postponed amid Ebola outbreak concerns

The upcoming India-Africa Forum Summit IV has been postponed following concerns over the Ebola outbreak in parts of Africa, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) announced on May 21, 2026.

The summit, originally scheduled to take place in New Delhi from May 28 to 31, was deferred after consultations between the Government of India and the African Union over the evolving public health situation on the continent.

In its statement, the MEA noted that the decision was taken in light of the “emerging health situation in parts of Africa,” referring to the spread of Ebola cases in several countries. Both sides agreed that the summit should be held at a later date once conditions improve.

The ministry also confirmed that discussions were held with the Chairperson of the African Union Commission to assess the situation and determine the best course of action.

Associated Events Also Put on Hold

Alongside the main summit, several related programmes scheduled under institutions such as the Indian Council of World Affairs (ICWA) and ICCR have also been postponed. Some African delegates had already arrived in New Delhi prior to the decision.

India reiterated its solidarity with African nations, stating its commitment to supporting an “Africa-led” response to the outbreak and assisting affected countries in managing the crisis.

The MEA further stated that new dates for the summit and related meetings would be decided through mutual consultations and announced later.

Setback to Diplomatic Engagement

The postponement is being seen as a temporary setback for India–Africa diplomatic engagement, though officials have emphasized that the decision was made in the best interest of public health and international cooperation.

The African Union had earlier called for global solidarity to address the Ebola outbreak, which has affected countries including the Democratic Republic of Congo and Uganda. The World Health Organization had also classified the situation as a Public Health Emergency of International Concern (PHEIC).

The India-Africa Forum Summit, one of the most significant platforms for diplomatic, economic, and cultural engagement between India and African nations, was last held in 2015 after delays attributed partly to the COVID-19 pandemic. Earlier editions took place in 2008 and 2011.

Officials continue to view the summit as a key mechanism for strengthening long-term cooperation between India and the African continent across development, trade, and strategic sectors.
