HMPV Virus Cases in India Live News Updates: An 80-year-old man in Ahmedabad, Gujarat, tested positive for Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV) on Thursday, bringing the total number of confirmed cases in India to at least 6 since January 7. A statement issued by the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) confirmed the patient does not have any travel history abroad and is currently receiving treatment at a private hospital, where the situation is being closely monitored by health authorities.
What has the Health Ministry said? All states have been advised to step up surveillance for Severe Acute Respiratory Illnesses (SARI) and Influenza Like Illness (ILI) to identify any surge in respiratory illnesses in the wake of the spread of the largely benign Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV) in China. The Indian Council of Medical Research has said that HMPV is “already in circulation” globally, including in India.
What is Human Metapneumovirus? Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV), identified in 2001, spreads through direct contact or contaminated surfaces. It causes mild respiratory symptoms, similar to the flu, such as cough, fever, and blocked nose. The virus primarily affects young children, the elderly, and those with weakened immune systems. Basic precautionary measures to combat HMPV include— wearing masks, avoiding close contact with people exhibiting flu-like symptoms and washing hands regularly.
