Severe rainfall in Sri Lanka’s central hill country has caused widespread flooding in the Hatton–Dickoya area, with around 50 estate houses submerged in low-lying sections of the Fordyce Estate in Dickoya.
The flooding occurred on the afternoon of the 21st following intense downpours that affected the region. According to the Sri Lanka Police Hatton Division, the situation has also led to a complete disruption of traffic along the Hatton–Fordyce–Dayagama road due to rising water levels.
Authorities confirmed that the incident was caused by the overflow of the Dickoya stream, which runs through the estate and eventually feeds into the Castlereagh Reservoir. Continuous rainfall in the catchment area led to the stream breaching its banks, inundating surrounding residential zones.
As a result, both estate housing units and sections of the main access road have been submerged, leaving residents affected and transportation severely impacted. Emergency response teams have been alerted, and monitoring of water levels is ongoing as authorities assess the situation.
Officials have urged residents in vulnerable low-lying areas to remain cautious as further rainfall may worsen conditions in the region.
