Sri Lanka’s Prime Minister and Minister of Education Harini Amarasuriya has announced that the long-awaited Grade 6 education reforms will be introduced from January 2027.
Speaking in Parliament on Monday (05), the Prime Minister stated that groundwork for the new reform programme is already in progress, with key stages nearing completion.
She revealed that a special review committee appointed to examine previously printed Grade 6 learning modules identified to contain several issues—has now concluded its evaluation. The panel has recommended necessary revisions, and discussions on the updated content have been finalised.
According to Amarasuriya, the corrected modules are scheduled to be sent for printing within this month, ensuring readiness ahead of implementation.
The Prime Minister also highlighted that teacher training programmes linked to the new curriculum will begin in June, with financial allocations already secured to support the initiative.
In addition, awareness sessions for teachers, parents, and students are set to commence in July, aimed at ensuring a smooth transition to the updated education framework.
Amarasuriya made these remarks while responding to queries raised by Opposition MP Chamara Samapath Dassanayake during the parliamentary session.
The upcoming reforms are expected to bring significant changes to Sri Lanka’s school education system, particularly at the junior secondary level.
