Government Updates Parliament on Death Threat Investigations Involving PM and Opposition Leader

Sri Lanka’s Public Security Minister Ananda Wijepala delivered a statement in Parliament today, providing updates on ongoing investigations into reported death threats made against key political leaders, including Prime Minister Harini Amarasuriya and Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa.

The Minister confirmed that the Prime Minister’s Office received a threatening email, which prompted an official complaint by an Additional Secretary. The authorities immediately sought assistance from Google, and a report has since been received.

According to Minister Wijepala, the IP address associated with the threatening email was traced to sources in the Netherlands and Germany. “We have requested a further detailed report and will present the findings to court upon receipt,” he added.

Regarding the threat to Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa, the Minister said that in August 2024, a complaint was lodged via the Ministry’s emergency hotline, claiming an associate of the underworld figure ‘Loku Patti’ was planning a sniper attack. However, after investigation, it was concluded that the allegation was false, and the mobile number used for the tip-off was traced and found to be unreliable.

The Minister assured Parliament that all necessary steps are being taken to safeguard national leaders and ensure the credibility of threat assessments.
