Sri Lanka Initiates Government Talks with Russia to Secure Fuel Shipments
Sri Lanka has officially launched high-level discussions with Russia to explore options for importing fuel, Cabinet Spokesman Dr. Nalinda Jayatissa confirmed.
Speaking at today’s (24) weekly Cabinet media briefing at the Department of Government Information, Minister Jayatissa explained that the government is actively pursuing intergovernmental agreements to ensure a steady supply of petroleum products, with formal talks already underway.
He added that the Russian Deputy Energy Minister is expected to visit Sri Lanka in the near future, and these discussions are likely to be a key topic during the visit.
Addressing remarks from the Iranian Ambassador in Colombo about Iran’s readiness to provide fuel, Minister Jayatissa said the offer is appreciated. However, he noted that countries with available tankers are better positioned to take immediate advantage, while Sri Lanka currently faces logistical constraints.
The Minister also confirmed that several fuel orders have been placed, with some shipments scheduled to arrive in Sri Lanka as early as April, helping to ease the ongoing energy situation.
