Chamasha Ekanayake, a 24-year-old Sri Lankan medical student in Belarus, is rewriting what’s possible for women in sport. Once dreaming of lab coats and stethoscopes, she now holds a 310kg paired deadlift world record – the only Sri Lankan to do so under the NPA World Federation.
Born in Mirigama to a hardworking family, Chamasha’s discipline and resilience were shaped early on. After facing challenges in pursuing local medical studies, she moved to Belarus – where she unexpectedly found her calling in powerlifting. 🧬➡️🏋️
With no formal coaching, she started training by watching YouTube videos. Her talent was soon noticed by global coaches, including Belarusian legend Alexander Godis and Sri Lankan coach Harsh Peiris, who helped shape her into a world-class athlete.
In 2025, Chamasha stunned the world by deadlifting 160kg solo and 310kg in a paired event, earning the prestigious ‘Elite’ title. She balances a grueling medical schedule with elite-level training, clean nutrition, and even aspirations to model on the international stage.
But for Chamasha, this is more than just lifting weights — it’s about inspiring change, breaking gender stereotypes, and proving that Sri Lankan women belong in every arena – from clinics to competition platforms.
As she sets her sights on the Sri Lankan National Championships this August, she’s not just lifting weight — she’s lifting a nation’s pride.
