Five players from the Iran women’s national soccer team have been granted humanitarian visas in Australia after seeking asylum over fears of persecution in their home country.
The move followed discussions between Donald Trump, former U.S. President, and Anthony Albanese, Australia’s Prime Minister, regarding the team’s situation during the Asian Cup tournament.
The remaining team members are currently staying in a Gold Coast hotel, with Albanese stating that support is available to them should they choose to accept it. “Australians have been moved by the plight of these brave women,” he said, adding, “They’re safe here, and they should feel at home here.”
Reports indicate that the five players left their team hotel discreetly with the help of Australian authorities, seeking government assistance after leaving the team’s accommodation. The development highlights the ongoing challenges faced by the team amid political pressures in Iran.
