The Museum at the Fashion Institute of Technology (FIT) has launched a new exhibition titled “Art X Fashion,” exploring the deep and evolving relationship between fine art and fashion across centuries. The exhibition features around 140 garments, accessories, textiles, photographs, and artworks, tracing how the two creative disciplines have continuously influenced each other from the 18th century to the modern era.
Curated by Dr. Elizabeth Way, the exhibition challenges the long-held perception that fashion merely imitates fine art. Instead, it highlights the dynamic exchange between artists and designers, demonstrating how both fields shape culture, identity, and innovation.
The exhibition begins with a historical timeline showing how art and fashion emerged from shared cultural movements. Visitors can explore thematic sections linked to major art movements such as Rococo, Art Deco, Surrealism, Pop Art, and Postmodernism. Another section, titled “garmenting,” examines contemporary art practices that incorporate clothing and accessories into fine art works.
One of the key discussions in the exhibition revolves around the question, “Is fashion art?” By examining creativity, craftsmanship, and cultural impact, the show invites audiences to reconsider fashion’s artistic value.
The “Art X Fashion” exhibition is open to the public from February 18 to April 19, 2026, offering visitors an opportunity to explore the powerful connections between fashion, art, and cultural expression.
