The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) has announced that Eileen Wang, the Mayor of Arcadia, California, has been charged in federal court with acting as an alleged unregistered agent of the People’s Republic of China.
According to federal authorities, the case relates to activities between late 2020 and 2022, during which Wang and another individual, Yaoning Mike Sun, allegedly operated under the direction of Chinese government officials. Prosecutors claim they coordinated with individuals in the United States to promote pro-China messaging and influence public perception.
Investigators allege that a website called US News Center, which presented itself as a news platform for the Chinese-American community, was used to publish content aligned with directives received from foreign officials. The content reportedly included pro-PRC narratives intended for audiences in the United States.
The U.S. Department of Justice stated that Wang has agreed to plead guilty to a felony charge, which carries a maximum penalty of up to 10 years in prison. She is expected to appear before the U.S. District Court in Los Angeles for initial proceedings, with a formal plea anticipated in the coming weeks.
Officials further alleged that in 2021, communications via the encrypted messaging app WeChat included pre-prepared articles sent by foreign officials for publication purposes.
Senior U.S. law enforcement officials described the allegations as serious, warning that foreign influence operations targeting democratic systems undermine public trust and institutional integrity. The FBI Counterintelligence Division stated that such cases will continue to be investigated aggressively.
Following the charges, reports indicate that Wang has resigned from the Arcadia City Council, thereby stepping down from her role as mayor.
Authorities emphasize that the investigation remains ongoing as part of broader efforts to address alleged foreign interference within U.S. institutions.
