Draper and Norrie exit at Indian Wells quarter-finals

Both British players, Jack Draper and Cameron Norrie, were eliminated in the quarter-finals of the BNP Paribas Open at Indian Wells.

Draper’s title defence ends
Defending champion Draper’s attempt to retain his 2025 title came to a dramatic halt after a straight-sets loss to Daniil Medvedev. Draper, who claimed his first ATP Masters 1000 crown last year by defeating Holger Rune, struggled from the outset as Medvedev raced to a 6–1 opening set, breaking Draper early and establishing a 4–0 lead within 15 minutes.

The second set was much closer, with Draper fighting back to 5–5. Controversy arose when the umpire ruled that Draper had caused a “hindrance” during a rally after gesturing to dispute a line call. The point, initially in Draper’s favor, was awarded to Medvedev following a review, drawing boos from the crowd. Medvedev then broke serve and won the set 7–5, ending Draper’s defence. Despite the dispute, Draper accepted the outcome, insisting his gesture had not affected his opponent, while Medvedev acknowledged the situation was awkward but deferred to the umpire’s decision.

Norrie falls to Alcaraz
World No. 1 Carlos Alcaraz overcame Britain’s Norrie 6–3, 6–4 to reach the semi-finals, continuing his unbeaten start to the season. Norrie had previously defeated Alcaraz at the 2025 Paris Masters, coming from a set down to claim one of the biggest wins of his career.

At Indian Wells, Norrie started strongly, breaking Alcaraz to reduce a 4–2 deficit to 4–3 in the first set. However, Alcaraz regained control, breaking back and closing the set in 31 minutes. In the second set, Norrie briefly surged to a 2–0 lead, but Alcaraz responded with four consecutive games, maintaining composure under pressure. Despite saving two match points, Norrie was unable to turn the match around, allowing Alcaraz to serve out the win and advance.
