It’s unfortunate to hear that Sri Lanka Customs has seized a significant consignment of cannabis, worth a substantial Rs. 1.2 million, at the Bandaranaike International Airport’s Air Cargo Village. The authorities have employed innovative methods to uncover the hidden drugs, as the cannabis was cleverly concealed within domestic heaters that had been cleared by a courier agent.
The shipment, which originated from Canada and was addressed to a recipient in Piliyandala, contained a substantial 1,883 grams of Kush, divided into nine parcels hidden within six heaters. This raises concerns about the involvement of organized crime and the ease with which these substances can be smuggled into the country.
The street value of Kush is currently estimated to be between Rs. 6,000 and 7,000 per gram, which translates to a whopping Rs. 11.266 million to Rs. 13.221 million for the entire consignment. This is a stark reminder of the lucrative nature of the illegal drug trade and the need for continued vigilance by law enforcement agencies.
As a result of this successful seizure, the suspect, along with the drugs, was handed over to the Police Narcotic Bureau for further investigation. It is crucial that authorities thoroughly investigate this case and bring those responsible to justice to curb the spread of drugs and maintain public safety.
This incident serves as a stark reminder of the importance of effective customs checks and co-operation between law enforcement agencies to combat the illegal drug trade.
