New Digital System to Streamline Cargo Clearance at Colombo Port

In a significant step toward modernising trade operations, Sri Lanka Customs has announced that cargo clearance for three major inspection yards linked to Colombo Port will move fully online starting this Friday, April 3.

The initiative, confirmed by Director General Seevali Arukgoda, is expected to streamline procedures and improve efficiency in one of the country’s busiest logistics hubs.

Speaking at a stakeholder briefing held on March 31, Arukgoda highlighted that the transition to a digital platform would enhance transparency and accountability in cargo handling and clearance processes. The move is also aimed at reducing delays, minimising manual intervention, and ensuring smoother coordination among all parties involved in port operations.

Under the new system, importers, exporters, and clearing agents will be able to complete cargo clearance procedures online, eliminating the need for physical documentation and in-person processing at inspection yards. Authorities believe this will not only save time but also improve the overall ease of doing business in Sri Lanka.

The digital rollout comes as part of broader efforts to modernise customs operations and align them with international standards. By adopting technology-driven solutions, Sri Lanka aims to strengthen trade facilitation, reduce bottlenecks, and enhance the country’s competitiveness as a regional logistics hub.

Industry stakeholders have welcomed the move, noting that faster and more transparent clearance processes could significantly benefit businesses reliant on timely imports and exports. The new system is also expected to reduce congestion at cargo yards and improve workflow management at the port.

Officials indicated that further enhancements and expansions of digital customs services may follow, depending on the success of the initial rollout.
