Chamari and Sri Lanka women eye series whitewash in Grenada ODI finale

The Sri Lanka Women will take the field for the third and final ODI against the West Indies Women in Grenada today (25), aiming to complete a rare 3-0 series sweep on foreign soil after securing two narrow victories in the opening matches.

Beyond the prestige of a clean sweep, Sri Lanka is also focused on accumulating vital points for direct qualification to the 2029 Women’s World Cup, as the series forms part of the ICC Women’s Championship. The visitors claimed the first ODI on February 20 by 10 runs, followed by a 14-run win in the second game just 48 hours later.

Led by captain Chamari Athapaththu, the team is looking to achieve its first away whitewash against the Windies since 2003. Meanwhile, the hosts will aim to prevent a rare home series defeat, their last 3-0 loss at home dating back to a series against England Women four years ago.

Sri Lanka’s recent form favors them, as their last clean sweep in a bilateral ODI series was also over the Windies at home in 2024. The batting backbone has been provided by Hasini Perera, Chamari Athapaththu, Harshitha Samarawickarama, and Vishmi Gunaratne, with notable contributions from Nilakshika Silva and Kavisha Dilhari. The team will rely on these players to anchor innings on the slow, turning pitches prepared by the Windies.

On the bowling front, the Lankan spin trio of Inoka Ranaweera, Kavisha Dilhari, and Sugandika Kumari has already taken 13 wickets across the first two ODIs. How the Windies handle this spin attack will be critical in deciding the outcome of the final game.

For the home side, youngster Jannillea Glasgow has been a standout performer with twin half-centuries from the lower-middle order. However, the rest of the batting lineup will need to adapt to the conditions and the visitors’ variations in spin bowling to mount a challenge in what is largely a must-win scenario for pride.
