BYD Electric Vehicle Demand in Sri Lanka Surges Beyond Expectations

Demand for BYD electric vehicles (EVs) in Sri Lanka has surged beyond expectations, with over 5,000 units reserved since the brand’s market entry earlier this year, according to John Keells Holdings (JKH). The announcement was made at a media briefing by JKH Chairperson Krishan Balendra, who highlighted that orders for BYD’s electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles have significantly outpaced projections.

The group, which launched its new energy vehicle arm John Keells CG Auto (JKCG), revealed that the robust order book is expected to contribute “materially” to the group’s overall financial performance in the upcoming quarter.

Following the relaxation of import restrictions earlier this year, BYD has quickly established itself as a key player in Sri Lanka’s EV and PHEV market segments. Popular models such as the ATTO 3, SEALION 6, DOLPHIN, SEAL, and the newly introduced SHARK 06 are leading the surge in consumer demand. JKCG also announced plans to introduce the premium DENZA line, further enhancing the brand’s local presence.

In its latest annual report, JKH disclosed that JKCG has been appointed BYD’s exclusive partner to market its commercial vehicle range in Sri Lanka, a segment yet to be officially launched but offering significant potential. The report emphasized that the development of a robust EV charging infrastructure is essential to unlocking growth in commercial fleet electrification.

Liu Xueliang, General Manager of BYD’s Asia-Pacific Auto Sales Division, praised Sri Lanka as a “key market” in South Asia despite its relatively small size. “Sri Lanka’s scale means it can serve as a global case study for the positive impacts of electric mobility on a national scale,” he said.
