Famous Food Chain to Open in Australia

Iconic US chain Bubba Gump Shrimp Co. to open first Australian restaurant.

A popular American restaurant chain inspired by the 1994 hit film Forrest Gump is officially making its way to Australia, sparking debate among food lovers over whether it will live up to the original experience.

Bubba Gump Shrimp Co. has confirmed it will open its first Australian location in the Brisbane suburb of Sandgate later this year, marking the brand’s official entry into the local market.

The restaurant chain, which launched in California in 1996, is heavily themed around the Tom Hanks film, featuring movie-inspired décor, memorabilia, and a seafood-focused menu.

The new venue even features the iconic “Jenny” boat, ping-pong tables, and an official merchandise store.

Diners can expect Southern-style comfort food, with signature dishes like shrimp scampi and ribs appearing alongside Aussie staples like burgers and fresh salads.

While the brand is distinctly American, the restaurant has committed to using locally sourced ingredients.

The venue will also feature a dedicated drinks list, including beer, wine, spirits, and cocktails, and diners can even take home the glassware as a souvenir.

SKJ Capital Operations General Manager Adam Greer said the brand is looking to bring something “fun, energetic and experience-driven” to Brisbane’s dining scene.

While the news has sent many into a frenzy online, the reaction hasn’t been entirely positive, as Aussies argue whether the concept is still relevant in 2026.
