Bayern Munich sign Nestory Irankunda, 17, from Adelaide United

Bayern Munich have signed 17-year-old Australian prospect Nestory Irankunda from Adelaide United.

The winger will join Bayern from the A-League side on July 1, 2024, at which point he will be 18. Bayern say Irankunda will sign a “long-term” contract when he arrives and Adelaide have stated they are receiving a club-record fee as part of the transfer.

“I’m happy to have this all finalised and to be heading to one of the best clubs in the world — it’s a real dream come true,” said Irankunda.

“I’ve worked hard to try and make my family proud.

“It’s going to be great to be able to see out the season with Adelaide United and try and have some success.”

“We have had Nestory on our radar for some time and are pleased that we have reached an agreement with him and Adelaide United about a move to Munich next summer,” said Jochen Sauer, Bayern’s head of youth development.

“We would like to thank those responsible at United for the always good discussions.

“Nestory is an extremely fast wing player, good at dribbling and finishing and with a lot of power towards the goal. We are convinced of his potential and that he will take the next steps with us.”

Irankunda made his senior debut for Adelaide in January 2022. Last season, he scored five goals in 22 appearances — all of which were as a substitute.

He earned a call-up to the senior Australia side in March but did not make his debut, having been named on the substitutes’ bench for a pair of friendlies against Ecuador. Irankunda then played for the Australia Under-17 side at the Asia Cup in June.
