Marvel Studios delivered a major surprise at CinemaCon on Thursday, unveiling the first extended look at Avengers: Doomsday, its highly anticipated multiverse crossover film that marks the return of Robert Downey Jr. in a new role.
Studio chief Kevin Feige introduced the presentation during Disney’s showcase in Las Vegas, noting that Doomsday continues the storyline after Avengers: Endgame. He also highlighted the film’s expanded scope, including the long-awaited introduction of the X-Men into the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Directed by Anthony and Joe Russo, the film reunites the duo with Marvel following their work on Infinity War and Endgame. The script is written by Michael Waldron and Stephen McFeely. Joe Russo described Doctor Doom as a deeply layered antagonist, saying the character is “not just a villain” but one who is always several steps ahead.
Robert Downey Jr. made a surprise stage appearance to loud applause, walking out to “Sympathy for the Devil” and confirming his return to the Marvel universe in a completely new role. He expressed excitement about rejoining the franchise in a fresh capacity.
The highlight of the event was the debut trailer, which offered the first masked glimpse of Downey Jr. as Doctor Doom. The footage also teased a major conflict, with Thor warning the Avengers about an overwhelming new threat and suggesting only a “miracle” could save them.
The trailer ended with a surprise appearance from Chris Evans, who joins the ensemble in a shocking moment that drew huge reactions from the CinemaCon audience. Evans also briefly appeared on stage, joking about the villainous Doom and adding to the excitement surrounding the film.
Earlier teasers released in late 2025 had already built anticipation, featuring characters from across the Marvel universe, including Thor, Steve Rogers, the X-Men, Shuri, and members of the Fantastic Four. Those previews collectively generated massive online attention ahead of the full reveal.
Set for release on December 18, Avengers: Doomsday is already being positioned as one of the biggest cinematic events of 2026, reuniting key creative forces behind Marvel’s most successful films and expanding the franchise into new multiverse territory.
