Australia to Build Strategic Fuel Stockpile of 1 Billion Litres

Australia has announced plans to establish a massive 1 billion-litre national fuel reserve in a move aimed at strengthening energy security and protecting the country from potential global supply disruptions linked to escalating tensions in the Middle East.

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said the government-backed stockpile would ensure long-term availability of essential fuels such as diesel and aviation fuel, helping safeguard the nation during international crises.

“Our number one priority remains protecting Australia from the worst effects of this crisis,” Albanese told reporters, highlighting concerns over instability in global energy markets.

The initiative will be further outlined in next week’s federal budget, which is expected to detail funding and implementation plans.

Energy Minister Chris Bowen noted that Australia has been among the few members of the International Energy Agency without a strategic national fuel reserve. He said the government has been assessing ways to better prepare the country for future global shocks.

“We have been looking at what we need to do to better prepare Australia for future shocks,” Bowen said, adding that the international environment is becoming increasingly unstable.

Australia’s geographical isolation and reliance on imported fuel make it particularly vulnerable to global supply disruptions. The country operates only two domestic oil refineries and depends heavily on overseas shipments.

Like many Asia-Pacific nations, Australia relies significantly on oil transported through the Strait of Hormuz, a critical maritime route that has historically carried around one-fifth of global oil and gas supplies.

However, shipping activity through the strait has reportedly declined sharply following heightened geopolitical tensions after recent military actions involving the United States and Israel near Iran, raising further concerns over global energy stability.
