Sri Lanka endured another disappointing outing at the T20 World Cup, suffering a comprehensive 51-run defeat to England in their Super Eight clash at the Pallekele International Cricket Stadium on Sunday.
Chasing a modest target, Sri Lanka’s batting lineup crumbled under pressure and was dismissed for just 95 in 16.4 overs, extending England’s strong head-to-head record in T20 internationals. Captain Dasun Shanaka was the lone bright spot with a 30-run knock from 24 balls, as only three other batters reached double figures.
England’s bowlers shared the spoils, with Will Jacks claiming three wickets. Jofra Archer picked up two, while Liam Dawson and Adil Rashid struck twice each to dismantle the Sri Lankan innings.
Earlier, Sri Lanka’s bowlers produced a disciplined effort to restrict England to 146 for 9 in their 20 overs. Dunith Wellalage led the attack with impressive figures of 3 for 26. Maheesh Theekshana and Dilshan Madushanka collected two wickets each, while Dushmantha Chameera chipped in with one.
For England, opener Phil Salt anchored the innings with a fluent 62 off 40 deliveries, though regular wickets prevented the visitors from posting a larger total.
Sri Lanka had opted to field after winning the toss but were unable to capitalise with the bat. They will look to regroup quickly ahead of their next Super Eight encounter against New Zealand on Wednesday at the R Premadasa International Stadium.
