Academy Rules Out AI Actors and Writers from Oscar Consideration

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has announced that performances created using artificial intelligence will not be eligible for Academy Awards, as it moves to tighten rules surrounding the use of AI in filmmaking.

Under the updated guidelines, only real human performers will qualify for acting categories at the Oscars. The Academy clarified that performances must be carried out by living actors and credited in the film’s official billing to be considered eligible, explicitly excluding AI-generated avatars or digital replicas.

In addition, the new rules state that screenplays must be written by human authors in order to qualify for writing categories. Works generated or significantly produced by chatbot systems or other artificial intelligence tools will not be accepted for nomination.

The decision reflects growing concerns within the film industry about the rapid rise of AI-generated content and its potential impact on creative professions.

The announcement comes shortly after an AI-generated version of late actor Val Kilmer was showcased to cinema exhibitors, nearly a year after his passing. The demonstration reignited debate over the ethical and artistic implications of recreating performers using artificial intelligence.

The Academy’s move is seen as a firm stance to preserve human creativity at the center of film recognition, ensuring that Oscar eligibility remains tied to authentic human performance and authorship.
