The Galle Chief Magistrate, Sameera Dodangoda, has issued an order for the release of the bodies of 84 Iranian sailors currently stored in two mobile cold storage units at Galle National Hospital. The remains are to be handed over to representatives of the Embassy of Iran in Sri Lanka, according to reports by Ada Derana.
The court directive, issued on the morning of March 11, instructs the hospital’s director to facilitate the transfer of the sailors’ bodies to the Iranian embassy officials without delay.
This decision follows a formal request submitted to the Galle Magistrate’s Court by the Galle Harbour Police, who were overseeing the case and coordinating with embassy authorities to ensure that the remains are released in accordance with legal and diplomatic protocols.
The order brings an official resolution to the sensitive matter, allowing the Iranian embassy to take custody of the sailors’ remains for proper repatriation and further arrangements.
