Britney Spears was taken into custody on suspicion of driving under the influence in Ventura County on the evening of Wednesday, March 4. The 44-year-old singer was released in the early hours of Thursday, March 5, and is scheduled to appear in court on May 4.
According to a statement from the California Highway Patrol, a black BMW 430i was reported for “erratic driving at high speed” to the Ventura Communications Centre. Officers stopped the vehicle and identified Spears as the sole occupant.
The CHP confirmed that Spears displayed signs of impairment and underwent several field sobriety tests. She was subsequently arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence of a combination of alcohol and drugs. Spears was also taken to a nearby hospital for a blood test to determine her blood alcohol content, though she did not suffer any injuries.
She was booked at the Ventura County Sheriff’s Office around 3 a.m. and released roughly three hours later under a cite-and-release procedure, meaning she was neither held on bail nor placed on probation. Test results are pending, and authorities continue to investigate the incident.
