Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has begun a two-day official visit to Malaysia, aiming to strengthen bilateral relations, boost trade, and deepen cultural and strategic cooperation between the two nations.
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi will begin a two-day official visit to Kuala Lumpur on Saturday, marking a key moment in India–Malaysia relations. The visit comes at the invitation of Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim and is expected to give fresh momentum to the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership between the two countries.
According to India’s High Commissioner to Malaysia, B.N. Reddy, discussions during the visit will focus on enhancing cooperation in trade, the economy, emerging technologies, energy, and education. Both nations are also looking to expand collaboration into new areas that reflect evolving regional and global priorities.
Excitement is high among Malaysia’s Indian-origin community, one of the largest overseas Indian populations in the world. The visit is expected to strengthen people-to-people ties, along with cooperation in finance, security, and cultural exchanges.
A major highlight of the trip will be Prime Minister Modi’s outreach to the Indian diaspora through a large community event titled “Selamat Datang Modi Ji” in Kuala Lumpur. The event will feature cultural performances and is expected to attract massive participation. Both Prime Minister Modi and Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim will jointly address the gathering, symbolizing the growing closeness between the two nations.
ASEAN India Economic Council Chairman Ramesh Kodammal welcomed the visit, stating that it has generated widespread enthusiasm and offers an opportunity to elevate Malaysia–India relations. He noted that bilateral trade stood at around USD 20 billion in 2023–24 and is expected to grow further.
Delegation-level talks and the signing of Memoranda of Understanding are scheduled for Sunday, aiming to formalize new areas of cooperation and strengthen long-term partnerships.
