MoU on Political Consultation Between Sri Lanka and Finland

Sri Lanka’s Cabinet of Ministers has approved a proposal to sign a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Finland, aimed at establishing a Political Consultation Mechanism to strengthen bilateral relations.

Diplomatic ties between Sri Lanka and Finland date back to 1954, with 2026 marking the 72nd year of engagement. Over the decades, the partnership has grown to cover political, economic, social, cultural, and educational collaboration.

The planned MoU is expected to boost cooperation across multiple sectors, including politics, the economy, education, environmental initiatives, consular services, and cultural exchanges. It will also provide a framework for regular dialogue on regional and multilateral matters of shared interest.

The proposal was tabled by the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Foreign Employment, and Tourism.
