Commercial Bank of Ceylon PLC has made history by becoming the first bank in Sri Lanka to introduce Google Pay, partnering with global giants Google and Visa to enhance the country’s digital payment ecosystem. This milestone positions the bank as a pioneer in offering secure, seamless, and contactless transactions to Sri Lankan consumers.
Commercial Bank is currently the only financial institution in Sri Lanka to offer Google Pay functionality for Visa debit and credit cardholders. This exclusive advantage allows customers to add their cards to Google Wallet, authenticate via OTP or call-center verification, and make tap-and-go payments at any Visa-enabled contactless terminal, both locally and internationally. With NFC-enabled Android smartphones, users no longer need to carry physical cards or cash, ensuring a smooth and secure payment experience.
The bank partnered with IDEMIA for tokenization and utilized Visa’s Token Service (VTS) to enhance transaction security. Tokenization replaces the actual card number with a unique digital token, ensuring sensitive data is never exposed. Additionally, Euronet’s payment infrastructure supports reliable and secure processing.
Commercial Bank’s Managing Director/CEO, Mr. Sanath Manatunge, highlighted that the collaboration marks a milestone in advancing Sri Lanka’s digital payments landscape. He emphasized the bank’s long-term strategy to support a cashless future through world-class innovations.
Visa’s Country Manager for Sri Lanka and Maldives, Avanthi Colombage, also noted that the partnership is shaping a new chapter in digital payments by creating a faster, safer, and more interoperable experience for millions of Sri Lankans.
The launch will roll out in phases, initially covering selected card ranges. Commercial Bank, widely recognized for digital excellence including its award-winning mobile app, continues to strengthen trust and drive digital adoption through next-generation payment technologies.
