The Sri Lanka Transport Board (SLTB) is set to recruit women as bus drivers and conductors for the first time, with staff to be dressed in newly designed, air hostess-style uniforms, Transport Minister Bimal Rathnayake announced.
According to the Minister, interviews are currently underway to hire 450 drivers and 300 conductors, with women included in the intake.
In the initial rollout, female drivers and conductors will be assigned to school buses in the Colombo district, with the programme expected to expand nationwide in later stages.
The move is aimed at modernising the SLTB’s public image, improving service standards, and opening new employment opportunities for women in the transport sector.
