The Centre has extended the deadline for filing Income Tax Returns (ITRs) for the Assessment Year (AY) 2025-26 by one day, following widespread complaints of technical glitches on the Income Tax e-filing portal.
Originally due on July 31, the deadline had already been extended to September 15. In a late-night announcement on Monday, the Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) confirmed that taxpayers would now have until September 16, 2025, to file their returns.
“The due date for filing of Income Tax Returns (ITRs) for AY 2025-26, originally due on 31st July 2025, was extended to 15th September 2025. The CBDT has decided to further extend the due date for filing these ITRs from 15th September, 2025 to 16th September, 2025,” the department posted on X at 11:48 p.m.
The e-filing portal was placed in maintenance mode from midnight to 2:30 a.m. on Tuesday to implement utility changes.
The department also shared that more than 7.3 crore ITRs had already been filed by September 15, surpassing last year’s record of 7.28 crore. “We sincerely thank taxpayers & professionals for their timely compliance. To facilitate further filings of ITRs, the due date has been extended by one day (16th September 2025),” it added.
Earlier in the evening, the department released a guide addressing browser-related issues, advising users on troubleshooting steps. However, many taxpayers reported that the glitches persisted despite following the instructions.
The last-minute extension comes as a relief to millions of taxpayers still struggling with filing issues on the portal.
