More than 100 flights have been cancelled across the UK following a major air traffic control issue, causing widespread disruption to travel plans nationwide.
The National Air Traffic Services (NATS) confirmed that the technical problem has been resolved. However, airlines and airports are still grappling with significant delays and a backlog of flights.
As of 7:30 PM BST, analytics company Cirium reported that 67 departing flights and 55 arriving flights had been cancelled.
In an official statement, NATS said:
“We are working closely with airlines and airports to safely clear the backlog. We sincerely apologise to all those affected.”
Passengers have taken to social media to share their experiences. Asha, 18, said her first-ever interrailing holiday has gone off-track due to the disruption. Meanwhile, David and his family, whose flight from Crete to Birmingham was diverted to Paris, remained positive, saying “everyone’s in good spirits.”
Though the root cause of the issue has been fixed, it may take several more hours — or even until the following day — for operations to return to normal.
