Canada to Recognize Palestinian State at UN in September Amid Global Shift

Canada has announced its intention to formally recognize a Palestinian state at the United Nations this September, aligning with similar declarations from the UK and France. Prime Minister Mark Carney made the announcement on Wednesday, citing recent commitments to democratic reforms by the Palestinian Authority (PA) and underscoring Canada’s longstanding support for a two-state solution.

“Canada remains firmly committed to an independent, viable, and sovereign Palestinian state coexisting peacefully with Israel,” Carney stated during a joint press briefing with Foreign Minister Anita Anand.

The recognition will take place during the 80th session of the UN General Assembly, contingent upon the PA implementing promised reforms. Notably, Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas has pledged to hold general elections in 2026, excluding the militant group Hamas from participation. Abbas has also reportedly assured Canada that the future Palestinian state will not be militarized.

Carney emphasized, “The Palestinian Authority has committed to the reform process, and we will support their peaceful pursuit of statehood under those conditions.”

Canada’s move follows closely on the heels of announcements by France and the United Kingdom. UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer stated the UK will proceed with recognition in September if Israel fails to agree to a ceasefire in Gaza, while France confirmed a similar timeline last week.

The international shift comes amid mounting concern over the deepening humanitarian crisis in Gaza, where ongoing Israeli military action and blockades continue to prevent critical aid from reaching civilians.

Despite this recognition, Carney reiterated Canada’s unshakable support for Israel’s existence and security in the region: “Canada continues to stand firmly behind Israel’s right to live in peace and security.”

The announcement drew swift condemnation from Israel, which accused Canada of undermining ceasefire negotiations and rewarding Hamas. “This decision rewards Hamas and damages ongoing efforts to secure peace and the release of hostages,” Israel’s Foreign Ministry said in a statement.

The United States also expressed disapproval. A White House official told Reuters that President Trump views such recognition as a concession to Hamas and will not follow Canada’s lead. “President Trump believes this rewards Hamas, and his focus is on delivering humanitarian aid to those suffering in Gaza,” the official added.
