Justice Preethi Padman Surasena, the most senior judge of the Supreme Court, was officially sworn in as the 49th Chief Justice of Sri Lanka, in a ceremony held at the Presidential Secretariat. The oath was administered in the presence of President Anura Kumara Dissanayake.
Justice Surasena’s appointment follows the retirement of former Chief Justice Murdu Nirupa Bidushinie Fernando and was approved by the Constitutional Council.
An esteemed legal professional, Justice Surasena began his career in 1989 after being called to the Bar and served in the Attorney General’s Department as a State Counsel. His judicial journey includes appointments as a High Court Judge in 2007, Court of Appeal Judge in 2016, President of the Court of Appeal in 2018, and a Supreme Court Judge in 2019.
His extensive experience and seniority in the judiciary made him a fitting successor to lead the apex court of Sri Lanka.
Secretary to the President, Dr. Nandika Sanath Kumanayake, was also present at the swearing-in ceremony.
