The Starlink satellite internet service will be accessible to local customers after a one-week evaluation of the service, Telecommunications Regulatory Commission of Sri Lanka (TRCSL) Director General Bandula Herath said.
He said that the TRCSL had granted the necessary licences in July 2024 to permit the delivery of Starlink satellite broadband services within the country. By December 2024, the Commission had approved five primary tariff packages.
“In recent months, multiple discussions took place between the TRCSL and Starlink Services, to create a framework for gathering data essential for technological security and taxation.
“All initial arrangements have now been completed,” Herath said. A total of 112 units of Starlink technical equipment have already been imported into the country, with the first 12 units expected to be distributed to local consumers by the end of this week.
Both the TRCSL and the Defence Ministry will oversee the service during the initial operational phase to ensure compliance with technical security standards and service quality. After this one-week oversight, the TRCSL will assess the results and take the necessary actions to support the ongoing provision of Starlink services in the country.
