Dr. Anil Jasinghe, Secretary of the Ministry of Health, has assured the public that there is no current risk of a new COVID-19 variant spreading in Sri Lanka. In a press release citing data from the Epidemiology Unit, he stated that there is no need for unnecessary fear.
Although recent media reports highlighted rising COVID-19 cases in some Asian countries, these increases may be due to factors such as inadequate disease management. In response, the Ministry of Health has strengthened national-level preparedness and implemented protective measures to safeguard public health.
The country’s Integrated Respiratory Surveillance continues uninterrupted in selected hospitals, and current data shows no significant rise in COVID-19 cases. Laboratory surveillance systems are also in place to detect potential epidemic situations.
While occasional increases in respiratory illnesses, including influenza and COVID-19, are expected, the overall risk to the public remains low. Dr. Jasinghe, however, advised extra caution for high-risk groups—such as the elderly, immunocompromised individuals, and those with chronic conditions.
He emphasized the ongoing importance of hygiene and respiratory etiquette, including frequent hand washing and covering the mouth and nose when coughing or sneezing. Hospitals are also well-prepared to handle any potential outbreaks.
Finally, Dr. Jasinghe urged the public to rely on official updates and remain vigilant to any changes in the COVID-19 situation.
