Since last week, Etna has been painting the sky with breathtaking “smoke rings,” a rare phenomenon that has left both scientists and onlookers in wonder.
These remarkable “volcanic vortex rings,” as they are scientifically termed, emerge from the combination of rapid gas release and the unique shape of the vent. The spectacle unfolded from a new crater that suddenly manifested on Etna’s summit, marking yet another chapter in the volcano’s tumultuous history.
Renowned volcanologist Boris Behncke, affiliated with the National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology in Catania, provided insights into this extraordinary event through a Facebook post. According to Behncke, Mount Etna stands unparalleled in its production of vapor rings, setting new records with each eruption. He described the recent phenomenon as unprecedented, noting that no other volcano on Earth rivals Etna’s propensity for creating these mesmerizing rings.
“On the late afternoon of April 2, 2024, a small vent appeared on the northeastern rim of the South-East Crater, emitting bursts of incandescent gas,” Behncke detailed. “By the following morning, it became evident that these bursts were coalescing into an impressive array of steam rings. This activity has persisted ever since, with Etna unleashing hundreds, if not thousands, of these exquisite rings into the atmosphere.”
Despite the grandeur of this display, reports suggest that surrounding villages and Catania airport have remained largely unaffected. Unlike major eruptions that have led to airport closures in the past, the current activity poses minimal disruptions to daily life.
Mount Etna’s fiery temperament is no stranger to Sicilians, as the volcano has remained in a near-constant state of activity for the past decade. In 2021, Etna made headlines when it spewed such copious amounts of volcanic material over six months that its height increased by nearly 30 meters. Standing proudly at 3,357 meters, Etna reigns as the tallest peak in southern Italy, its summit adorned with five main craters that serve as the epicenter of its eruptions.
